There was once a time when athletes believed that exercise was exercise. If you wanted to get more endurance for basketball, run 5 miles. You want to gain stamina and strength for football? Run 5 miles and lift some weights. Oh, you’re a boxer? Well, then you should be running 5 miles a day. Luckily, exercise scientists realized that a universal remedy for sports did not exist. Cardio is not so easily defined anymore. There is long distance running, sprints, stairs, intervals, etc. While running for ridiculous amounts of time can benefit your heart’s health, it may not make you a better MMA fighter. How often does an MMA fight go at a nice, even pace for the duration of the match? So would it make sense to run a predetermined distance at a steady pace in preparation for the rigors of MMA? No. That’s why here at Top Flight MMA we believe in keeping things interesting. While road work has the advantage of conditioning your joints for impact, it is not the final answer. During the course of an MMA bout, your body will be called upon to perform at peak levels with very little rest. One second you are bouncing on the balls of your feet trading punches and kicks, the next you are in a clinch or on the ground trying to overpower your opponent. While this is taking place, your lungs will be fighting to function and your heart will be pounding out of your chest. It’s like swimming a mile on only one breath of air. At Team Lloyd Irvin Aberdeen, we use circuit training and running high intensity intervals along with other proven training methods to keep us prepared for the rigors of our specific sport. We use these as tools to supplement the intense practice of our techniques both while running drills and live action grappling (or sparring when doing Muay Thai). In MMA, great strength does not come from benching a tractor or running a marathon, but from getting your muscles to work continuously while your body’s oxygen intake is severely limited. Many sports analysts would argue that MMA fighters are some of the most well-conditioned, finely tuned athletes in the world. So whether you’re interested in climbing into the octagon, or just want to lose those holiday pounds for the summer, come visit us at Top Flight MMA.
