This makes for the 2nd weekend in a row for Great fights in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)and in Boxing. Lets start with MMA. UFC made up for last weeks free event. We will just touch on the fights that really stuck out. 1st Matt Hughes vs BJ Penn. Wow this fight was very impressive, gotta say didn’t think it was going down like that but Bj’s boxing was sharp.
He took advantage of the a lazy jab from Hughes and came back with a pin point cross to Hughes’ chin to finish up with some gnp. Bj came out with some heavy but sharp punching he looked great, especially with back against the wall from dropping 2 consecutive decisions to Frankie Edgar, he came out and performed.
Edson Barboza def. Mike Lullo
This fight showed great execution of muay thai round kicks. Edson looked like UFC champ Jose Aldo with his kicks. Its not often fights are stopped from low kicks, the only other person I can think about that did it is Team Lloyd Irvin’s Brandon Vera. But man those kicks were killer I know Lullo wont be walking right for another couple of weeks!

Main Event Rampage vs The Dragon

One of the most memorable things about this fight was the humilty and the character of Rampage. Its is easy to see why fans love him. Rampage looked good the first 2 round stalking Machida with success. But in the 3rd Machida let the Dragon out for second and landed punches that surely would have but a lesser man to sleep. Rampage is tough oh and for a second fans thought they might witness another armbar slam but Machida wisely aborted the armbar attempt. I definitely thought Rampage won the fight.

Save the best for last(Team Bias) Phil Davis def. Tim Boetsch.

Team Lloyd Irvin’s own Mr. Wonderful Phil Davisdid his thing, and pulled off the newly dubbed ‘Mr. Wonderful’. If you didn’t see it, it was a one hand kimura. The kimura traditionally takes 2 hands to pull off especially against strong people but Phil pulled off a one hand kimura. Team Lloyd Irvin competitors have had the weapon in their arsenal, as a matter fact DJ Jackson pulled it off early this year at grappling tournament, but it is awesome to see Team Lloyd Irvin technical systems being used at the highest levels of competition and hearing other say people how they have never seen anything like it.  This fight was Phil’s first on the main card of a UFC PPV event and he past the test with flying colors earning submission of the night bonus. Phil is no long a prospect but now a  205 contender.

So for MMA as a good night. On to Boxing, last weekend boxing ruled with Manny Pacquiao vs Antonio Margarito. This weekend the fight to see was the long awaited rematch between Paul Williams Vs Sergio Martinez. This are 2 of the most feard boxers in the welter weight division meaning they have to go up in weight to get fights, but last year they put on the put on the fight of the year with Williams edgeing out a unanimous decision. Fans were anticipating another exciting fight and they got that all they way in the 2nd round when Martinez caught Williams with a b-eau-ti-ful left hand that instantly put williams to sleep. Both came in hard looking to land a left cross just Martinez landed his first. I for one am looking foward to seeing a rubber match both these guys put on spectacular fights.

All in all as fight fan (MMA and Boxing) I was thoroughly pleased and I am looking forward to the next couple of months because they have some barn burner scheduled all the way into spring time. For the near future I am looking forward to seeing GSP and Koscheck. This appears to be St. Pierre’s greatest test. We shall see who comes out UFC welter weight champ.
